So it went as well as I expected yesterday. Better, in some ways. I actually knew of the place in Somerville (somervillemusicspaces.com) but I hadn’t suggested it, as I didn’t know how everybody would feel about using a space that we’d have to pay a fee to use. Overthinking things is so much fun, ain’t it? I figured these cats would be like “okay, great, now we all have to PAY to get together with this Rufus guy? yeesh.” But Purcy suggested it, and everybody just said “yeah, sure, twenty bucks for each of us, no problem.” He booked the room and off we went.
You’ve got to understand, John Z and Tim are coming from Marlborough, and Skip just got back to Shrewsbury from a bit of a mini-tour all the way down the coast to NC and beyond. And yet, not only were these guys willing to drive to Somerville, they were willing to actually pay a cover charge as well. Not something a lot of people would do. I really hope they got what they were expecting out of it and weren’t just blowing sunshine up my ass. I’ve got no real connections and no real professional credentials, and they know this. I’m just a middle-aged guy in Shirley who’s been drumming pretty much his entire life (I guess I CAN say I’ve studied pretty seriously with guys who were truly masters) who’s trying to put together what is essentially a “music club.” So that was pretty damn neat, I gotta say. It was a pleasure, and I couldn’t help but feel honored and a little humbled.
I think Purcy did record some of what transpired, even if it was just on his phone. Things flowed nice and organically, we literally just played. No charts, no agenda, just went at it. And it didn’t sound horrible. Anyway. More to come, I’m sure.
